The Chief of Naval Operations Environmental Readiness Division announced the 25 winners of the Fiscal Year 2009 Environmental Awards on Feb. 5. Each year, the annual CNO Environmental Awards competition recognizes Navy ships, installations and people for exceptional environmental stewardship.

On May 30, 2002, N45 changed its name from Environmental Protection, Safety and Occupational Health Division to Environmental Readiness Division because it better reflects its mission.

The mission of the Environmental Readiness Division is to focus on developing solutions that will allow U.S. naval forces to train for combat and effectively carry out their military missions while minimizing impacts on the environment.

The FY 2009 categories included: natural resources conservation, cultural resources management, environmental quality, sustainability, environmental restoration and environmental excellence in weapon system acquisition.

Of the 25 winners, three are with the Naval Air Systems Command at Patuxent River. Each was awarded the Environmental Excellence in Weapon System Acquisition Team Award:

F/A-18E/F & EA-18G Program Office, PMA-265 Green Hornet Team of Naval Air
Systems Command.

F-35 Lightning II Environmental, Safety and Occupational Health Team of Naval Air
Systems Command

PMA-264 Marine Species Mitigation Research Team of Naval Air Systems

Rear Adm. Herman Shelanski, director of the CNO Environmental Readiness Division, commended the winners, โ€œBravo zulu to all award winners, and thanks to all commands who participated.
