LA PLATA, Md. — A Lexington Park man has been charged by criminal summons after a La Plata homeowner alleged he acted as an HVAC contractor without the required license.
Tyrone Maurice Nolan, 55, of Lexington Park, was charged with acting as a contractor without a license, according to court records and charging documents.
The case stems from an alleged May 21, 2026, incident at a home on Saint Marys Avenue in La Plata.
According to the application for statement of charges, the homeowner reported that Nolan confirmed by text message that he was still working as an HVAC contractor and came to assess an outdoor unit that served the upstairs of the home.
The homeowner alleged Nolan said the unit was leaking refrigerant and recommended a replacement unit that would cost $2,200. Charging documents state the money was transferred through Zelle.
The homeowner later reported Nolan requested additional money, including $698 and $150 for labor, and said he would return to install the unit. Charging documents describe several later messages in which Nolan allegedly said he would install the unit, pick up the unit or return the money, but the work was not completed as expected.
The application states police later made contact with Nolan, who said he was working to get the money transferred back. The homeowner reported receiving later communication that Nolan planned to drop off the unit, but the homeowner no longer felt comfortable having him come to the residence and wanted a refund instead.
Charging documents state Nolan later arrived at the property with what was described as a questionable air-conditioning unit but was unable to provide a receipt. The homeowner later had another contractor evaluate the system, and that contractor allegedly reported the unit Nolan dropped off was a 1.5-ton unit, while the existing system was a 3.5-ton unit.
The homeowner also reported confirming with the Maryland Home Improvement Commission that Nolan was not currently licensed and should not be performing HVAC work, according to charging documents.
A criminal summons was issued June 9.
A preliminary inquiry is set for July 27 in Charles County District Court.
