Members of the Calvert Collaborative For Children and Youth Inc. (CCFCY), along with a representative from America’s Promise, hosted a celebration of Calvert County’s third straight designation as one of the nation’s “100 Best Communities.” The Tuesday, Jan. 8 event was held at the North Beach Town Hall and was conducted to laud the leaders of the Twin Beaches community for its part in earning the distinction.

“Our organization tries to provide more resources so that young people become successful,” said CCFCY President Guffrie Smith.

Jordan LaPier, America’s Promise Alliance’s senior director of “100 Best Communities” told the audience that the five “promises” being kept by the designated communities include caring adults, safe places, health, education and opportunities to give back.

“We all have to pitch in,” said LaPier. “These are the building blocks of America’s future.”

LaPier noted that 320 communities nationwide applied for America’s Promise top 100. “I don’t think any of our communities are perfect,” he added.

The event’s highlights included the Presentation of the Colors by Girl Scout Troop 6745, viewing of the America’s Promise Watch Party video, a youth dance presentation by the Abigail Francisco School of Classical Ballet, the performance of a scene from the Twin Beach Youth Players’ recent production of “A Christmas Carol and a special presentation to elected officials from North Beach and Chesapeake Beach. Smith and LaPier presented the officials with the circular “100 Best Communities” sign for display in the Twin Beach area.

“We are proud of North Beach and we want to make this place wonderful for children,” said North Beach Mayor Mark Frazer.
