On Tuesday, Oct. 23, the Charles County Board of Commissioners proclaimed October 2012 as Intellectual Disabilities Month.
People with intellectual disabilities cut across the lines of racial, ethnic, educational, social, and economic backgrounds.ย People with intellectual disabilities are valued members of society.ย They are our friends, neighbors and co-workers who find fulfillment living everyday lives.
Charles County citizens with intellectual disabilities and their families strive to live self-determined lives and realize their own personal aspirations. Early intervention, education, home and community-based services continue to be vital to enabling citizens with intellectual disabilities to function, thrive and realize their full potential.
Each year, the Knights of Columbus distribute Tootsie Rolls to raise funds to benefit nonprofit organizations helping people with intellectual disabilities.ย ย
