The Calvert County Commissioners presented a proclamation Tuesday, Nov. 20 to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jack Smith, in recognition of the veteran educatorโ€™s recent honor of being named Maryland Public School Superintendent of the year for 2013.

That honor was bestowed upon Smith by the Public School Superintendentsโ€™ Association of Maryland (PSSAM) earlier this month at the associationโ€™s convention in Ocean City. Smith becomes a candidate for the national associationโ€™s honor, which will be announced in February. ย Prior to reading the proclamation, Commissioner Steven R. Weems [R] noted that former Calvert Board of Education member William Phalen submitted Smithโ€™s name for consideration by PSSAM.

ย

โ€œHe exhibits his commitment to working effectively with all aspects of the federal, state and county governments, as well as the Maryland State Department of Education, during difficult fiscal times,โ€ the proclamation stated.

ย

โ€œWe couldnโ€™t be any prouder,โ€ said Commissionersโ€™ President Gerald W. โ€œJerryโ€ Clark [R]. โ€œWe are very proud of our school system.โ€ย

ย

โ€œI would be remiss if I didnโ€™t say how much I appreciate being able to work in this community,โ€ said Smith, who was hired as an administrator by Calvert County Public Schools in 1998 and has served as superintendent since 2006. Smith added that the county commissioners and county government staff have been โ€œtremendous for this school system.
