The Calvert County Commissioners presented a proclamation Tuesday, Nov. 20 to Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jack Smith, in recognition of the veteran educatorโs recent honor of being named Maryland Public School Superintendent of the year for 2013.
That honor was bestowed upon Smith by the Public School Superintendentsโ Association of Maryland (PSSAM) earlier this month at the associationโs convention in Ocean City. Smith becomes a candidate for the national associationโs honor, which will be announced in February. ย Prior to reading the proclamation, Commissioner Steven R. Weems [R] noted that former Calvert Board of Education member William Phalen submitted Smithโs name for consideration by PSSAM.
ย
โHe exhibits his commitment to working effectively with all aspects of the federal, state and county governments, as well as the Maryland State Department of Education, during difficult fiscal times,โ the proclamation stated.
ย
โWe couldnโt be any prouder,โ said Commissionersโ President Gerald W. โJerryโ Clark [R]. โWe are very proud of our school system.โย
ย
โI would be remiss if I didnโt say how much I appreciate being able to work in this community,โ said Smith, who was hired as an administrator by Calvert County Public Schools in 1998 and has served as superintendent since 2006. Smith added that the county commissioners and county government staff have been โtremendous for this school system.
