Leonardtown, MD – In honoring women for their contributions to the growth and strength of the Nation, the Commissioners of St. Mary’s County issued a proclamation in recognition of the month of March as Women’s History Month. The ceremony took place during their weekly business meeting.
The proclamation cited American women’s critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of the life of the country by constituting a significant portion of the labor force across the Nation.
“Women have played a unique role throughout the history of the Nation by providing the majority of the volunteer labor force,” said Commissioner President Randy Guy. “They were particularly important in the establishment of early charitable, philanthropic, and cultural institutions in our Nation.”
American women have been leaders, both in securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement, and the peace movement.
The commissioners asked citizens to actively participate in the scheduled activities and programs which work toward recognizing the contributions of the women of St. Mary’s County. The most significant of which is the Women of the Year banquet. Sponsored by the Commission for Women, the event takes place on Wednesday, March 16 at the Southern Maryland Higher Education Center in California.
