PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — Calvert County Schools passed a tuition update to its nonresident tuition policy at the July 9 Board of Education (BOE) meeting.

Policy No. 3720: Regarding the Enrollment of Residents and Non-Residents in and the Setting of Tuition Rates for Calvert County Public Schools determines that the school has the right to set and charge tuition for nonresident students, both out of county and out of state.

Chief Financial Officer Christine Jewett presented the tuition updates to the BOE. The update raises regular out-of-county tuition to $12,717 per student from $12,045 per student, and the out-of-state tuition rate to $20,773 from $19,478.

The biggest update is the change in tuition costs for out-of-county and out-of-state special education students. Currently, Calvert County doesn’t charge for out-of-county and out-of-state special education students to attend public schools in Calvert County. However, the new tuition rates will charge $38,151 for out-of-county special education students and $62,319 for out-of-state special education students.

Jewett specifically pointed to the variable costs of special education and that some students need high levels of support.

“The higher tuition rate for nonresident special education students ensures we are fairly recovering the true cost of these required services and protecting our local taxpayers from subsidizing the expenses,” Jewett said.

The updates passed 5-0. These changes will not affect students in Calvert County zoned for Calvert schools.
