Last weekend Cub Scout Pack 430 sang Christmas Carols for the senior citizens at Calvert Pines Senior Center. Pack 430 is sponsored by St. John Vianney Church in Prince Frederick. While most of the Pack belongs to St John’s, church membership is not required to join.
Members of the Pack come from as far away as Huntingtown and Solomon’s Island and attend Calvert, Mutual, Saint Leonard, Huntingtown and Our Lady Star of the Sea Elementary schools. The Pack meets on Sundays at 2pm at St. John Vianney church in Prince Frederick. About 20 cubs, plus leaders and a few friends, were in fine full voice as they belted out Christmas Carols and other holiday tunes for a small but very appreciative audience. Just before the singing started one cub lamented that there were not many people ready to listen to their concert. These concerns were put into perspective by the wise words of their songmaster, Erik Johnson, “We’re not here to impress people with our singing, but rather to show them that we care by wishing them a Merry Christmas.”
Among the audience that day were Lois Sullivan and Joyce Bell, both of whom took the time to thank the cubs and their leaders that day. “I enjoy this every year. I’ve been coming for three years and it’s always very nice,” said Mrs. Sullivan. Mrs. Bell and Mrs. Sullivan both stated that they thought that children need to be kept busy these days and that scouting teaches them good values, discipline and respect, provided that they have good leaders. “Scouting, both Boy and Girl Scouting, keeps kids from trouble. Kids these days need to be kept busy, or they will find the wrong thing to do and the wrong people to look up to,” said Mrs. Bell.
Pack 430 has been caroling at Calvert Pines for 4 years now. Three of which have been attended by this reporter. In my humble opinion, this group of singing scouts was more spirited and vocal than any previous years. I look forward to helping with their performance again in 2007.
