WASHINGTON — A 28-year-old District man was sentenced Wednesday, Aug. 5, to 15 years in federal prison for his role in a six-week armed robbery and carjacking spree that included at least 13 incidents across Washington, D.C., and Maryland.
Kanard Bishop was sentenced in U.S. District Court after pleading guilty to conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce by robbery and using and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
According to federal court records, Bishop and his co-conspirators carried out or attempted a series of armed robberies and carjackings between Feb. 14 and March 28, 2024, targeting convenience stores, restaurants, motorists and delivery workers.
The spree began Feb. 14 in Capitol Heights, where prosecutors said Bishop and co-defendant Edward Leroy Brown entered a convenience store, pointed firearms at an employee and demanded cash. When they were unable to open the register, the pair fled to a nearby McDonald’s.
There, they allegedly opened the drive-through window from the outside, pointed a firearm at an employee and fled again.
About a month later, on March 17, Bishop and another co-conspirator carjacked two people at gunpoint in the 4300 block of Southern Avenue SE in Washington, according to prosecutors. The group stole a 2008 Mercedes-Benz along with cellphones, a wallet, identification, a credit card and $2,000 in cash.
The pace of the crimes accelerated three days later.
During the early morning hours of March 20, prosecutors said Bishop and co-defendant Khalil Boyd carjacked a victim near 35th Street NE and stole a 2018 Dodge Durango.
Authorities said the group then used the stolen SUV during a string of additional crimes, including an attempted robbery at a McDonald’s drive-through, a robbery at a Denny’s on Benning Road NE, an attempted robbery at another McDonald’s in Landover and a robbery at a 7-Eleven in Landover.
At the Denny’s, prosecutors said Bishop ripped the cash register from the counter. At the 7-Eleven, he jumped over the counter to grab the register.
The group also robbed a convenience store in District Heights, where an employee was forced inside at gunpoint before cash and tobacco products were taken.
On March 27, Bishop and Boyd carjacked another motorist at a gas station in District Heights. Prosecutors said the victim was knocked to the ground during a struggle before the pair fled in his 2022 Dodge Challenger.
Later that day, Bishop and Boyd approached two FedEx employees working from a delivery truck in Southeast Washington, pointed firearms at them and stole their wallets, cellphones and four packages.
The spree ended the following day at a GameStop in District Heights.
According to prosecutors, Bishop and Brown entered the store, struck an employee and demanded that workers open the cash registers and safe. Police arrived while the robbery was underway, prompting both men to flee on foot while armed.
A detective shot Brown in the lower body as he fled. Bishop discarded a loaded firearm before he was apprehended, prosecutors said.
Boyd, who had been waiting outside in the stolen Challenger, fled the area, carjacked another driver at gunpoint and later crashed into two police cruisers before he was taken into custody.
U.S. District Judge Rudolph Contreras sentenced Bishop to 180 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release. Federal prosecutors had sought a 252-month sentence.
Brown, 26, also known as “Shiesty,” and Boyd, 20, pleaded guilty to the same charges and were also sentenced Wednesday, Aug. 5. Brown received 150 months in prison, while Boyd was sentenced to 144 months.
Bishop, Brown and Boyd pleaded guilty March 26.
The investigation was conducted by the FBI Washington Field Office Violent Crime Task Force and the Metropolitan Police Department’s Carjacking Task Force, with assistance from the Prince George’s County Police Department.
