Huntingtown Man Fires Shots At Cyclists On Charity Ride
David Earl Bustin

HUNTINGTOWN, Md. – On April 27, 2024, at approximately 10:10 a.m., the Calvert County Control Center received a 911 call from multiple victims who were riding their bicycles in a charity race on Hardesty Road when a blue pickup truck traveling behind them reportedly engaged in “road rage.”

According to court documents, a victim stated the driver of the truck swerved around him, attempting to cut him off the road. The truck then continued driving on Hardesty Road and pulled into the driveway of 4685 Hardesty Road.

According to the docs, an older white male with a beard exited the vehicle and retrieved a shotgun. The man then began shooting at the victims as he began traveling towards the residence on his bicycle. Neither victim was hit by gunfire. They immediately called 911, to which Calvert County Deputies responded.

When deputies arrived, the suspect, was not present. Contact was later made with the individual, who was identified as David Bustin (DOB: 11-16-1957). Bustin agreed to return in his blue Ford F150 truck to the scene where he was placed into custody without further incident.

According to the documents, during a recorded interview with Detective Freeland, Bustin reported that he was driving his truck on Hardesty Road earlier that day and passed the riding cyclists riding on the roadway. He then stated after passing them, he pulled into his driveway, located at 4685 Hardesty Road, and received his “Remington 1300” from the truck. He then proceeded to shoot 3 shells from the wood line parallel to the bicyclists traveling on Hardesty Road toward his home. Bustin stated that the cyclists were approximately 20 yards away when he fired the shotgun.

Bustin reportedly stated that he was unloading his shotgun. When Detective Freeland confronted that they both knew that was not how to properly unload a shotgun, Bustin stated that’s just how he did it.

Bustin reportedly stated that he “policed the scene,” and picked up the shell casings. Bustin then proceeded to put the shell casings in his Mercedes that was parked in his driveway. He then reportedly took his shotgun and placed it in the basement of his home. Bustin then left the home to take his grandson to a welding job before returning home and speaking with Detective Freeland.

A residential search warrant was later executed at approximately 2:54 p.m. During the search, three spent 12 ga. shotgun shells were located under the sriver seat of the blue Mercedes passenger car. Additionally, a Winchester Model 1300 was found in Bustin’s bedroom.

Due to both the victim’s and Bustin’s statements, Bustin was charged with two counts of First-Degree Assault with a firearm and two counts of reckless endangerment.

A preliminary hearing is set for June 6, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Calvert County District Court.

  1. Even my Gr gamm said that’s not how you unload a gun and why would he do it just after having a road rage incident > weak story ? The article states a bearded man was involved .. I’d like to know where di the photo a non bearded man come from ?
Was he attempting to throw off the investigation by shaving > this appears not to be a drivers license photo .. Was this a booking photo connected to this road rage gun shooting ? Certain that he is not a responsible gun owner , has anger management issues , and needs a psych evaluation . To add, all gun should confiscated and banned from any form of gun ownership … This guy has issues and a danger to society .

  2. Responsible Gun Ownership is key to keeping our 2nd Amendment Rights. Behavior as described in this article is why I’m filling out tons of paper work and waiting for MSP to confirm I’m a responsible citizen. I knew this was going down hill when I read “Remington 1300”.
