St. Leonard, MD – John Douglas Parran, 66, a former Calvert County commissioner, died Friday, March 22 after a lengthy illness. Parran, who first ran for commissioner in 1990 and again in 1994, was successful in his third bid in 1998. Parran ran for reelection again in 2002 but lost in the Republican Primary. He was narrowly defeated by Jerry Clark, who went on to win in the November General Election. Parran ran as an independent in 2006 but lost in the General Election.

Parran was a member of Calvert’s first five-member board of commissioners to have a Republican majority. Like most the board, Parran was an advocate for residential growth control in Calvert. In 1999, the majority of commissioners, including Parran, voted to set a build-out limit of 37,000 households.

Services for Parran will be held Friday, March 29 at Christ Episcopal Church on Broomes Island Road Port Republic at 11 a.m.
