PINEY POINT, Md. — Interlocking building brick lighthouses have filled the galleries at Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Historic Park, where the community’s holiday building challenge is now officially underway.
The exhibit follows the call for entries issued by the St. Mary’s County Museum Division and the Friends of St. Clement’s Island & Piney Point Museums, who invited participants to construct original lighthouse models using interlocking bricks and deliver them to the museum between Nov. 22 and Nov. 28 . Submissions were required to be entirely brick-built, no larger than 12 inches wide and deep by 20 inches high, placed on a sturdy base, and created without kits.
The finished models are now on display through Jan. 4, 2026, giving all museum visitors a chance to vote for their favorites. Voting is conducted by popular choice during regular museum hours and at holiday events such as Evening Tides and the Piney Point Holiday Open House. Additional voting tickets may be purchased in the museum store, with proceeds benefiting the site .
Entries are divided into two age groups — 12 and under, and 13 and up. Winners in each category will be notified on Jan. 5, 2026, and will receive a $25 Amazon gift card and recognition as one of 2025’s top lighthouse builders.
Museum Division Manager Karen Stone said the event is intended to celebrate the historic lighthouse while encouraging hands-on creativity. “To really celebrate Piney Point Lighthouse during the holidays, we thought making this competition a yearly occurrence would be a fantastic way to get families and the community involved,” she said. “What’s even more fun is that everyone will be able to see their creations on display at the museum!”
The museum expressed appreciation to all participants for their imaginative architectural designs and to Kayla Lynn’s Photography for documenting the exhibit.
