HOLLYWOOD, Md. — The Hollywood community is mourning the loss of longtime businessman, mentor and volunteer firefighter John O. “Johnny” Gatton Sr., who passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, surrounded by his family.

Gatton was widely known throughout St. Mary’s County as the patriarch of the Gatton family and the longtime face of Gatton’s Barber Shop, where generations of Southern Maryland residents sat in his chair for a haircut, conversation and friendship. His family said his remarkable life inspired countless individuals, fostered a deep sense of community and reflected more than 64 years of dedication to his craft.

“With profound sadness that we share that Johnny Gatton, the patriarch of our family, completed his journey to heaven on May 19th,” the family shared in a statement. “We celebrate his remarkable life, which inspired countless individuals, fostered a sense of community, and spanned over 64 years of dedication to his craft.”

Beyond the barber shop, Gatton devoted decades of service to the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department. The department announced the passing of its past president and life member, recognizing his years of dedication and leadership within the organization and the community.

Friends and family described Gatton as more than a barber and firefighter — he was a mentor, storyteller and trusted friend to many throughout Southern Maryland. His presence in Hollywood became a fixture of community life, where countless customers returned not only for a haircut, but for the conversations and kindness he shared so freely.

“As we honor his memory, we recognize the invaluable lessons he shared with us, guiding us toward our family business and shaping our paths,” the family said. “We smile knowing that his next adventure has already begun, with a line of friends eagerly awaiting a ‘Johnny Gatton haircut’ in heaven.”

Tributes continued pouring in across social media Wednesday as community members remembered Gatton’s warmth, generosity and unwavering commitment to the people around him.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced at a later time.
