Mechanicsville, MD – A fire sparked by an electrical malfunction displaced a St. Maryโ€™s County family and claimed the lives of several domestic animals Friday morning, Jan. 27, state investigators reported. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, the blaze caused $300,000 damage to the one-and-a-half story, wood-frame home on Sandgates Road in Mechanicsville.

โ€œAround 11:25 a.m. neighbors heard loud โ€˜boomsโ€™ coming from their neighborโ€™s house,โ€ a deputy state fire marshalโ€™s report stated. โ€œThey first saw smoke then fire coming from the back of the house. No one was home at the time of the incident. Several family pets perished as a result of the fire. The family is being assisted by the American Red Cross.โ€

Thirty-five firefighters responded to the one-alarm blaze, bringing it under control in 45 minutes. The fire marshalโ€™s office reported the fire originated in a screened in deck. No human injuries occurred as a result of the fire.

The displaced residents were identified as the “Cook family” in the fire marshal’s report.

Mechanicsville, MDย – On Friday, Jan. 27 at 12:20 p.m. a house fire was reported on North Sandgates Road in St. Mary’s County. Dogs were found inside the house and animal control was notified. Fire was visible upon arrival and under control within 20 minutes.

There are no injuries reported at this time.
