Watch out, Blue Crabs, Orioles and Nationals, there is another baseball team in our area to reckon with.
This past Memorial Day weekend, the St. Maryโs American Little League Indians were crowned champions of the first ever Maryland District 7 Memorial Day Invitational Tournament, held at the Robert Dean Stethem Memorial Sports Complex in Waldorf.
The hotly contested tournament took place over three days, spanning the weekend with the ultimate day of competition transpiring on Memorial Day. Competing were teams from Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince Georgeโs and St. Maryโs Counties.
The grueling competition required each team to play two games each on Saturday and Sunday. A random drawing determined the initial match-ups. After Sundayโs final games, the top four teams advanced to the semi-final and final rounds on Monday.
On Saturday, the Indians defeated the Waldorf American Angels 9 โ 0, in their first game. In the second game of the day, the Indians beat the Waldorf American Tigers 5 โ 0. The team returned on Sunday, where the Indians continued their winning ways by edging the Calvert American Orioles 15 โ 14. In this slugfest, the Indians entered the final inning down 14 โ 9 and scored six runs to gain the victory.
Sundayโs second game saw the Indians lose to the Laurel Indians in a fiercely competitive game, 7 โ 6. However, the 3 โ 1 won/loss record was enough for the Indians to advance to Mondayโs semifinal round.
The four teams to make it to the final day of competition were the Calvert American Nats/Red Sox (4 โ 0), St. Maryโs American Yankees (3 โ 1), St. Maryโs American Indians (3 โ 1), and the Waldorf American Angels (3 โ 1). While the Angels upset the top seeded Nats/Red Sox, the Indians and Yankees squared off. In this hitter-friendly game, the Indians out scored the Yankees 13 โ 5, advancing them to the final game against the Angels.
In the championship game, the Indians continued their dominance over the Angels, winning 8 โ 0, finishing as tournament champions with a 5 and 1 record.
The Indiansโ championship players were Sean Bailey, Zachary Brigham, Tyler Guy, Dominic Hare, Ben Henry, Danny McGovern, Jon Menges, Brady Norris, Tyler Sakach, Bobby Schieferdecker, Noah Wichrowski, and Trevor Young. Bo Henry was the manager with coaches Mike Bailey and Albie Norris.
