WALDORF, Md. — For generations of Southern Maryland families, Lefty’s Barbecue was more than a place to grab a meal — it was part of the community. That chapter came to a close as the longtime Waldorf restaurant announced it has permanently closed after more than three decades.
The family announced the news in a message to the community, writing, “We share the bittersweet news that Lefty’s Barbecue has permanently closed.”
Lefty’s Barbecue legacy began in 1989, starting out in a small roadside trailer before growing into a well-known Waldorf barbecue spot. What began with ribs, chicken and North Carolina-style pulled pork — fueled by stacks of hickory and mesquite wood — quickly built a following. Many longtime customers say you always knew you were close when you could smell the barbecue long before you pulled in.
From the beginning, Lefty’s was a family effort. Flavors were refined over time, recipes were perfected through trial and error, and everyone pitched in as the business grew. The result was barbecue that drew customers from across Southern Maryland — and as far as Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
In its farewell message, the family reflected on what the restaurant meant to the area, writing, “For more than three decades, Lefty’s Barbecue has been more than a place to eat — it has been a gathering place, a destination for fellowship, a source of comfort, and a true landmark in Charles County.”

The family cited ongoing challenges behind the decision, noting, “Despite our best attempts, ongoing challenges made it impossible for the restaurant to remain sustainable.”
While the restaurant doors have closed, the Lefty’s name is not gone entirely. “While the restaurant doors have closed, our family’s legacy lives on,” the message stated. Lefty’s barbecue sauces and spices remain available in stores and through other outlets, allowing longtime customers to keep the flavors on their own tables. The family also shared information for those interested in catering-related inquiries, leaving open the possibility of enjoying Lefty’s barbecue beyond the restaurant setting.
The announcement closed with thanks to loyal customers, employees and the community that supported Lefty’s Barbecue for nearly four decades.

Ugh. They were TERRIBLE for catering.
I came to love the NC Style BarBQ at Nicks of Clinton in the 90’s. A Pork BarBQ sub was $1.98. My last visit I bought 2 lbs to take to my in-laws. Clearly the best I ever had. Thank you
