Crofton, MD ย –ย On July 21 at approximately 11 p.m., Anne Arundel County Police Department (AACPD) officers responded to the report of a crash on Crain Highway (MD Route 3) northbound at Carver Road in Crofton involving a car and tractor trailer.ย
According to an AACPD press release, the preliminary investigation revealed that a Chevy Malibu was northbound on Crain Highway “when it drifted out of the left lane and slightly onto the left shoulder. The Chevy then struck the rear of an unoccupied tractor trailer parked next to the Royal Farm store. The tractor trailer was correctly lit at the time with parking lights on and hazard lights flashing.”ย
The impact tore open the roof and side of the Chevy, ejecting the driver, who was declared dead at the scene by Fire Department personnel. The Chevy driver was identified as Andrew Bryan Smith, 28 of Chesapeake Beach (pictured, above). Smithโs body was taken to the Medical Examinerโs office in Baltimore for autopsy.
It does not appear alcohol or speed was a contributing factor.ย
The AACPD Traffic Safety Section is handing the investigation pending review by the Anne Arundel County Stateโs Attorney.
According to Rausch Funeral Home, Smith, whose nickname was โBirdman,โ was a 2006 graduate of Huntingtown High School. He was employed as a forklift operator.
