Lusby Man Charged After Prince Frederick Traffic Stop Leads To Suspected Crack Cocaine, Passenger Hospitalized

PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A Lusby man was charged after a traffic stop in Prince Frederick led investigators to suspected crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia, according to charging documents.

Timothy Ward Smith Jr., 47, of Lusby, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance that was not cannabis and possession of CDS paraphernalia following the June 5, 2026, traffic stop.

The incident began around 8:22 p.m. when a Maryland State Police corporal observed a black Chevrolet Cruze traveling east on Dares Beach Road in the area of Armory Road. Charging documents state the vehicle’s registration came back suspended for an insurance lapse.

A traffic stop was conducted on Dares Beach Road near Dorsey Road in Prince Frederick. Smith was identified as the driver. Charging documents state another occupant was listed as the vehicle’s registered owner.

While speaking with Smith and the passenger, the trooper observed several criminal indicators and requested a K-9 scan of the vehicle. A Calvert County Sheriff’s Office K-9 unit arrived around 8:32 p.m. and conducted a scan, which resulted in a positive alert for controlled dangerous substances.

During the investigation, a female officer was requested to search the passenger. Charging documents state the passenger voluntarily admitted she had concealed suspected CDS and paraphernalia inside her body and later retrieved the items while an ambulance was on scene.

Recovered items included a cigarette box containing two glass smoking devices with suspected crack cocaine, a folded dollar bill containing suspected crack cocaine and one suspected crack cocaine rock with a total weight listed as 5 grams.

Smith was advised of his Miranda rights and agreed to speak with the trooper. When asked about the suspected CDS recovered during the investigation, Smith denied knowing about it, according to charging documents.

The passenger was also advised of her Miranda rights and agreed to speak with investigators. Charging documents state she claimed Smith gave her the CDS and told her to conceal it.

The passenger was transported to CalvertHealth Medical Center for further care related to injuries. Charging documents state she would be charged on an application.

Smith was arrested and taken to the Calvert County Detention Center. Court records show he was released on recognizance on June 6, 2026.

A trial is set for July 21 in Calvert County District Court.
