California, MD— On August 8, St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Beyer responded to Walmart located at Miramar Way in California for the call of a theft in progress.ย
When Beyer arrived on the scene Deputy Potter of the St.Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office had detained the defendant, who was identified as Keith A. Mackall, 24 of no fixed address.ย
Beyer made contact with the complainant who was walking around the store, “when one of his coworkers told him he heard a loud noise, like something was being destroyed” according to charging documents.ย
The noise that was heard was coming out of the bathroom locatedย past the register. The complainant went into the bathroom to investigate and sawย Mackall’s feet in a stall and continuedย to hear the noises.ย
Potter made contact with Mackall in the bathroom. When Potter opened the bathroom door he, “observed Mackall attemptingย to hide the items using a seat cover,” according to charging documents.ย
Mackall immediately began arguing that he was innocentย and he as only being arrested, “for being a black male,” according to charging documents.ย
Photographs from the store’s cameras showed Mackall walking around the electronics section of the store with merchandise in his hands, attempting to conceal it in his shirt.ย
Mackall was placed under arrest and transported to the St.Mary’s County Detention Center, where he was charged with theft less than $1,000 and maliciousย destruction of property less than $1,000.ย
While en route to the detention center, Mackall stated, “he was at the Walmart to use their bathroom so he could ‘poop and jerk off’,” according to charging documents.ย
Mackall has a scheduled court appearanceย set for Sept 20, at the St.Mary’s County District Courthouse. Mackall faces a maximum jailย sentence of one year and eight months and/or a maximum fine of $1,000.ย
