On March 31 at 2:22 p.m., officers responded to Big Lots at 1200 Smallwood Drive in Waldorf, for a call of a counterfeit transaction in progress.
Upon arrival, Charles County Officer C. Gilroy made contact with the cashier who was handed a counterfeit $50.00 bill and pointed out the suspect. Officer Gilroy stopped the suspect, James Darnell Smith, 38 of Mechanicville, and found he was in possession of more counterfeit money.
Further investigation revealed Smith had purchased items from nearby stores, possibly using counterfeit money. Smith was arrested and charged with attempted theft. He was remanded to the Charles County Detention Center.
