The St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission is reporting a sanitary sewer overflow that occurred on March 24, 2011 at the Piney Point Road Bridge connecting Piney Point and St. George Island, Piney Point, MD. The sanitary sewer leak occurred as a result of a broken sanitary sewer pipe. The total volume of the overflow is unknown. The areas affected by this overflow are portions of St. George Creek and the Potomac River in the area of the bridge. Public contact of the affected portions of St. George Creek and the Potomac River should be avoided for seven days.
