Dear Charles Countians,
Now that all of Charles County’s primary election ballots have been counted, I would like to sincerely thank the voters for allowing me to serve as your state senator for the past 24 years. Charles County has been my lifelong home. My family has been here for hundreds of years, and I care deeply about this community.
I am proud to have led efforts to move Charles County and the state of Maryland forward during my tenure. Whether it was ensuring full funding of our public schools, fighting for desperately needed transportation projects for Southern Maryland, securing economic development opportunities, preserving our environment or building a robust healthcare system, I have always worked hard to represent my constituents to the best of my ability.
I am especially proud of my work to ensure that our judges reflect the diversity of our county, to increase funding for developmental disability and behavioral health community services, to maintain the success of Maryland’s hospital waiver and to secure funding for countless Charles County priorities, including scholarships, schools, roads and other projects.
None of these efforts would have been possible without the teams I have had the honor of working with over the years. Susan Lawrence, who has served as my chief of staff during my entire tenure in the Senate, has been the behind-the-scenes leader for all the work we have done for Charles County. My Senate Finance Committee team in Annapolis, our local delegation and other county elected officials, my campaign committee, and most importantly, my family and friends, have all been instrumental in our success.
The voters have now decided to go in a different direction, and I would like to congratulate my opponent on his primary election victory. I will continue serving as your senator until January 2019. As I reflect on my time in public office, I am incredibly humbled and eternally grateful for the opportunity to serve you for so many years. I continue to believe that Charles County’s best days are ahead, and I look forward to continuing doing my part to make that a reality. I also look forward to spending more time on my farm with my family and friends as my career in public service comes to a close.
