Leonardtown, MD – The Friends of St. Clement’s Island & Piney Point Museums was recently awarded a grant in the amount of $1,200 from Maryland Humanities through support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Maryland Historical Trust in the Maryland Department of Planning, and the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation for St. Clement’s Island Museum’s free yearly family event, St. Clement’s Island Heritage Day.
St. Clement’s Island Heritage Day, a family event set to occur on June 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at St. Clement’s Island Museum and on St. Clement’s Island State Park. The St. Mary’s County Museum Division encourages the public to visit St. Clement’s Island and become acquainted with the island’s past as expert guest presenters and interpreters share information and activities regarding the history, culture, heritage and ecology tied to the island.
Visitors will celebrate the history and heritage of St. Clement’s Island with tons of fun and free activities and programs out on beautiful St. Clement’s Island. The public will experience a day of history, wildlife and art, and take part in activities that include, games, lighthouse tours, traditional music and much more. Lots of related vendors will be on hand and free water taxi rides out to the island are included for all visitors attending the festivities.
“We’re extremely honored that Maryland Humanities will be supporting this amazing and fun educational event,” says Karen Stone, Manager of the St. Mary’s County Museum Division. “St. Clement’s Island is very important to the region and state not only historically, but also ecologically and culturally. We encourage families of all ages to have a fun time on the island while learning something new.”
Nonprofit organizations, community associations, and faith-based organizations were eligible to apply for funding for both rounds of the Maryland Humanities grant. In order to qualify, all projects had to be rooted in one or more disciplines of the humanities, enlist the participation of humanities scholars or experts, and be free and open to the public.
