OWINGS, Md. –  The Northern High School community has been coping with the loss of one of its own. Cody Blackwell, 16, a sophomore at NHS, died in a car accident in St. Leonard on December 13. He would have been 17 just a week later.

“He touched the lives of all those around him wherever he went and leaves behind a host of grieving family and friends, more specifically and importantly a truly heartbroken mom, dad and brothers,” Theresa McGuire, organizer of the GoFundMe and Cody’s aunt, said.

Reports from the scene indicate Cody caught a ride from his neighbor to see his girlfriend in Prince Frederick. After riding with his girlfriend’s mom back to their house, Cody went on his way home. As Cody rode in the passenger side, the car he was in went through an intersection and was t-boned by a pickup truck.

After first responders arrived, they cut him out of his seatbelt and the damaged vehicle. They then went through all the possible means of bringing him back.

“The Deputy handling the accident said the workers worked extremely hard to bring Cody back, but even after all their efforts, they were unable to. He died on impact. He didn’t suffer,” McGuire said.

Currently, the family is in the process of putting together his memorial and funeral. They created a GoFundMe to pay for the memorial Cody deserves and instantly saw an outpouring of community support. The family is very grateful to reach their goals and hopes this will help Cody’s memory live on.

The fundraiser recently closed but has accumulated $14,600 from almost 240 donors.

“Thank you, everyone. We have reached our goal to help the parents with funeral services for Cody Blackwell,” McGuire said.

Services for Cody will be at Rausch Funeral Home on December 21 from 6-8 p.m. and December 22 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m., followed by burial. A repast of Cody’s life has been set up at North Beach Volunteer Fire Department at 3 p.m.
