Yesterday I was at the MVA to get tags for my new vehicle. We expect to find lots of young ones there to get their Permits and Drivers License. And all of us think to ourself, “Oh great more kids to cause accident”.
To my absolute horror I see a much worse case. While waiting I am watching people and find in the line a lady and her elderly mother. The mother asks her daughter twice why they are there in which she responds that they are there to get her license. Of course at first I thought it was the daughter getting her license before the mother says; “Are we getting my tags?”. The daughter responds, “No mom your car already has tags; now we are getting your license so you can drive it.”
At this point I am thinking Oh My GOD I have got to be hearing this wrong. This lady can’t be getting a license to be on the road can she. When they get to the front of the line the MVA worker behind the counter asks several times for her Social Security Card and even holds her hands up indicating a card while speaking right at her loudly. The daughter is trying to help but then walks away and gets a seat while her mother searches her purse for her card. A few seconds later the elderly lady walks off to get a seat. She stands and looks around for her daughter but not seeing her she takes a seat; two seats away from her with a person between them. You can even tell she is still searching for her daughter until her daughter reaches over and gets her attention. This lady seemed so confused the whole time I am not sure how she can be left alone and here she is getting a license to drive.
Now I know that this lady probably wants to be independent but when the elderly are too disoriented to do the simplest of things on there own as this then are they really safe to be on the road? I myself think not. Knowing that MVA are allowing this scares me to be on the road for the safety of my children.
