HUNTINGTOWN, Md. — A Huntingtown woman is facing a felony assault charge after authorities say she pointed a handgun at another driver during a road-rage incident in Calvert County.

Liza Sue Castles, 59, is charged with first-degree assault and reckless endangerment following an encounter reported Jan. 22 along Emmanuel Church Road and Hollyberry Drive, according to court records.

According to a statement of probable cause, deputies were called to the area around 5:47 p.m. after receiving a report of a road-rage incident involving a firearm. Investigators said the encounter began earlier along Dares Beach Road, where another driver reported being followed closely by a silver sedan driving erratically.

The driver told deputies the vehicle slowed when she slowed, attempted to pass on the shoulder, and later braked abruptly in front of her before turning onto Wilson Road. Both vehicles later traveled onto Emmanuel Church Road, where the silver sedan allegedly stopped in the roadway near a residence.

The driver reported stopping behind the vehicle, at which point the driver of the silver sedan partially leaned out of the window and pointed what appeared to be a handgun in her direction. She told deputies she believed the firearm was aimed at her and recorded part of the encounter on her cellphone before the vehicle drove away.

Investigators said the cellphone video showed the driver of a silver 2012 Mercedes-Benz C300 holding a black handgun out of the driver’s side window. Deputies identified the driver as Castles after comparing the video with Maryland driver’s license records.

Authorities later located the vehicle at a residence on Queensberry Drive in Huntingtown. After obtaining a search warrant, deputies searched the home and recovered a Ruger LCP .380 handgun, a holster, a loaded magazine containing six rounds of ammunition, and additional ammunition, police said.

During an interview, Castles told investigators the handgun belonged to her. Police confirmed through the Maryland Gun Center that the firearm was legally registered to Castles and that she possessed a valid handgun permit.

Public business listings show Castles is a Calvert County-based attorney and is associated with the Law Office of Liza Castle. Authorities emphasized that despite the firearm being legally owned, the charges stem from the manner in which it was allegedly used during the encounter.

Castles was taken into custody and later released the same day on a $5,000 unsecured personal bond, court records show.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Feb. 20, 2026, in Calvert District Court.

  1. “the firearm was legally registered to Castles”
Isn’t it a FOPA violation for a state to have a gun registry?
