St. Mary’s County Board of Education Chairman Karin Bailey presents a bouquet of flowers to retiring board member Marilyn Crosby.
Leonardtown, MD — St. Maryโs County Board of Education member Marilyn Crosby was honored at the boardโs regular Sept. 24 meeting. Crosby resigned two weeks ago effective Sept. 30. She cited health issues as the reason. Crosby has been diagnosed with Ataxia, a neurological disorder that will require treatment at John Hopkins University Hospital.
Crosby is near the end of her second term and would have been up for re-election next year. The Commissioners of St. Maryโs County will have to make an appointment to replace Crosby until the next election. The commissioners have advertised for potential candidates.
At the Sept. 24 meeting, Board of Education Chairman Karin Bailey presented Crosby with a bouquet of flowers and noted her long experience as a teacher and her seven years of service on the board. โShe added an education perspective to our sessions,โ Bailey said. Crosby had 24 years of service before her retirement as a special education teacher.
Board member Mary Washington said she had seen Crosby grieve over the death of her mother and the joy of the birth of her two grandchildren. Washington said Crosby always โput the kids firstโ in her time on the board.
โWe all want Marilyn to get better,โ Washington said. She observed that Crosby epitomized the idea that โyou too can make a positive difference.โ
Board member Cathy Allen also wished her the best in her recovery from her health issues.
School Superintendent Scott Smith thanked Crosby. He said, โYouโve always been exceptionally kind to me,โ Crosby responded that Smithโs comments meant a lot to her.
In closing the short ceremony Crosby said, โThank you! Iโve had a good life. It is not over yet.โ
