The trio of guards Stephanie Saint-Aubin (Upper Marlboro, MD/Elizabeth Seton) and Kiely Murphy (Olney, MD/Good Counsel) and sophomore guard Allie Scott (Laurel, MD/Atholton) posted double-digit numbers in scoring in helping St. Mary’s (Md.) College women’s basketball pick up their first Capital Athletic Conference win with a 71-42 victory over Gallaudet University on Wednesday night.
St. Mary’s (6-7, 1-4) hopes to continue on the winning track when the Seahawks host the No. 18 Eagles of the University of Mary Washington on Saturday at 2:00. Gallaudet (2-12, 0-5) will travel to nearby Catholic University on January 20 for a two o’clock tip-off.
Saint-Aubin led all players with 19 points with 14 of those coming in the first half. The freshman guard was limited to 2-of-3 shooting in the second half by the Bison defense.
The Seahawks really took off in the first half, leading 25-7 at the 10-minute mark following a three-pointer by junior guard Megan Uglik (Frederick, MD/Linganore). Shooting 50% from the field, SMCM closed out the half on a 16-10 run to take a 41-17 halftime lead.
Murphy was also in double-figures at the half with 11 points off the bench. Pia Marie Paulone paced Gallaudet with nine points and four boards.
St. Mary’s continued its dominance in the second half, building its lead to 36 (63-27) with 6:59 remaining in the game. The Bison showed improvement in the second half as Gallaudet upped its first-half shooting percentage of 33.3% to 50%.
Scott finished the evening with 17, while Murphy added a career-high 18. Junior forward Lisa Daciek (Laurel, MD/Atholton) contributed eight rebounds and matched a career-high four assists. The Seahawks were able to capitalize on the Bison’s 36 turnovers by getting 39 points, including 28 in the first half.
Jessica Salisbury was the only Gallaudet player in double-digits with 10 points and six rebounds. The Bison out-rebounded SMCM, 35-27.
