UPDATE: Tesla Driver Critically Injured After Route 4 Multi-Vehicle Collision In St. Leonard
SAINT LEONARD, Md. — A serious multi-vehicle collision involving a septic truck, a box truck, and a passenger car shut down both directions of Maryland Route 4 near Ball Road in St. Leonard late Wednesday morning.
The crash was reported around 10:48 a.m., Jan. 7, 2026, in the area of Route 4 and Ball Road. Fire officials said a Tesla passenger car was crushed between the two larger vehicles, trapping the driver inside. The occupant of the Tesla was reported to be unconscious at the scene.
St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department units, along with paramedics and command staff, arrived quickly and confirmed the entrapment. Emergency aviation support was requested early due to the severity of the incident. Rescue crews were able to force open the Tesla’s door and extricate the trapped patient, who was transferred to a medic unit for treatment.
Fire officials said the patient was later airlifted by Maryland State Police Trooper 7 to an area trauma center. The driver of the box truck was evaluated at the scene by emergency medical personnel. No information was immediately available on the condition of the septic truck driver.
Crews established a landing zone near the crash scene, prompting the closure of both northbound and southbound lanes of Route 4. Northbound traffic was stopped at Ball Road and Calvert Beach Road, while southbound traffic was halted near Western Shores. Motorists were urged to use alternate routes and expect delays.
The crash remains under investigation.

There’s no excuse for this, period
Yes it’s a bad accident, but what was the tesla doing driving between to oversized trucks in the first place? Most likely driving where neither truck could see them aimlessly floating down the road clueless of their surroundings
They were stopped at a stoplight, idiot.
