PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A 47-year-old Prince Frederick man is facing a second-degree assault charge after a dispute over an ATM at a 7-Eleven escalated into a physical confrontation that was captured on surveillance video. The footage, viewed by a Maryland State Police trooper, contradicted the suspect’s claim that he acted in self-defense.
The incident occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at approximately 3:16 p.m. at the 7-Eleven on South Solomons Island Road. A trooper was dispatched for a report of disorderly conduct and located the suspect, Michael David Mahar Jr., walking shirtless on Route 4 with his two children. Mahar told the trooper he had been using the ATM when a stranger began verbally berating him. He claimed the argument escalated and, feeling he was in danger in front of his children, he pushed the other man in self-defense and left.
However, the other man involved told a different story. He stated that Mahar was taking a long time at the machine. When he saw the ATM screen indicate the transaction was complete, he walked up to use it, at which point Mahar pushed him out of the way.
According to the statement of probable cause, the trooper reviewed security footage from the 7-Eleven, which clarified the sequence of events. The video showed Mahar stepping away from the ATM, and the other man walking up to use it. The footage then shows Mahar grabbing the man “with both hands and physically throwing [him] away from the ATM.”
Mahar has been charged with second-degree assault. Under Maryland law, the misdemeanor carries a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $2,500. Court records show Mahar was charged via a criminal summons, which was served on July 30, 2025. A preliminary inquiry is scheduled for Sept. 15, 2025.
