Twice In One Day: Police Allege Waldorf Man Allegedly Stole Nearly $1,700 From Dick’s Sporting Goods

WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man is facing multiple theft charges after Charles County Sheriff’s Office investigators alleged he stole more than $1,600 worth of merchandise during two separate shoplifting incidents at Dick’s Sporting Goods that prosecutors claim were part of a single theft scheme, according to court documents.

Jamanti Malik Battles, 30, of Waldorf, was charged in the District Court for Charles County with two counts of theft of property valued between $100 and $1,500 and one count of felony theft scheme involving property valued between $1,500 and $25,000. The charges were filed July 18, 2026, through a statement of charges application.

According to the application for statement of charges, a Charles County Sheriff’s Office officer responded at approximately 3:35 p.m. April 4 to Dick’s Sporting Goods, located at 11080 Mall Circle in Waldorf, after receiving a report of a theft.

Investigators met with a Dick’s Sporting Goods loss prevention specialist, who reported that surveillance footage showed an unidentified man entering the store wearing a white shirt, tan pants, and a black hat. According to charging documents, the man concealed merchandise under his arm and exited through the main mall entrance without paying. The stolen merchandise from that incident was valued at $784.40.

During a follow-up investigation, the loss prevention specialist reported that the same suspect had been inside the store earlier that day. According to court records, surveillance footage from approximately 12:43 p.m. and 3 p.m. allegedly showed the same individual, although he had changed from a white shirt to a black long-sleeve shirt. Investigators allege the suspect used a black garbage bag to conceal merchandise valued at approximately $906.30 before leaving through the mall entrance without paying.

The loss prevention specialist told investigators that another Dick’s Sporting Goods employee who witnessed both thefts positively identified the suspect as Battles. Charging documents state the employee had become familiar with Battles during a prior investigation into an alleged theft at the store on April 15, 2026.

According to the application, the combined value of the merchandise allegedly stolen during the two April 4 incidents totaled $1,690.70, leading investigators to seek a felony theft scheme charge in addition to the individual theft counts.

Battles is scheduled to appear for a preliminary inquiry on Sept. 14, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
