At 3:05 p.m. Monday, two St. Mary’s College students were critically injured and one received minor injuries as a result of a motor vehicle collision on Route 235 at Mattapany Road in St. James.

The driver of a 1998 Ford Escort station wagon, Sean W Goerling, 18 of Laurel, was traveling eastbound on Mattapany Road and attempted to turn left onto northbound Rt. 235.

While crossing the southbound lane of Rt 235 Goerling failing to yield the right of way to a southbound 1996 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Leonard L. Lozen, 60 of Valley Lee.

The Suburban struck the car on the driver’s side of the vehicle in the intersection.

Volunteer firefighters and EMS workers from Bay District, Ridge and the Naval Air Station worked to remove the roof of the Escort to free the occupants.

Critically injured in the collision were the driver’s side rear passenger of the car, Alexandra Jiron, 20 of Silver Spring, and the driver, Goerling, who were flown to Baltimore Trauma Center by MSP Trooper 7 and 2.
The front seat passenger, Gina White, 19 of Eldersburg, received minor injuries and was treated and released from St. Mary’s Hospital.

The driver of the Suburban was not injured in the crash.

No contributing circumstances were uncovered on the part of Lozen.

Investigation and charges are pending the results of the investigation by SDFC David Corcoran and the St. Mary’s County Collision Reconstruction Investigative Team.
