WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man was charged after officers reported he pointed a gun at a manager while being terminated from his job at a Waldorf auto business.
Freddie Murphy Jr., 23, of Waldorf, was charged with first-degree assault, use of a firearm in a felony or violent crime and second-degree assault.
The charges stem from an incident reported at approximately 10:30 a.m. on July 6, 2026, at National Motors Inc., located at 2183 Crain Highway in Waldorf.
Charging documents state a manager told officers Murphy was employed as a mechanic at the business and began making threatening statements while he was being terminated.
The manager reported Murphy ran out of the building, went to the parking lot, entered his vehicle and pulled a firearm from either the floorboard or center console. Charging documents state Murphy pointed the gun at the manager while seated in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.
The manager reported she was inside the business when the firearm was pointed at her from outside. Murphy then left the business, charging documents state.
A witness who worked at National Motors told officers he heard a verbal altercation inside the business and later saw Murphy run to his vehicle, rack the slide of a black handgun and sit in the driver’s seat with the gun on his lap. The witness described the firearm as a Glock-style handgun.
At approximately 12:01 p.m., officers responded back to National Motors after Murphy called and asked for officers to stand by while he picked up his mechanic tools from the business.
Murphy was arrested when he returned. After being advised of his rights, charging documents state Murphy agreed to answer questions and reported the loaded firearm was located in the center armrest of his vehicle.
Officers were working to obtain a search warrant to search the vehicle, charging documents state.
Murphy was initially held without bond on July 6. He was released on recognizance following a July 7 bond review before Judge Sally C. Chester in Charles County District Court.
The first-degree assault charge carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison. Use of a firearm in a felony or violent crime carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison.
A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 5, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
