LA PLATA, Md. — A long-running motocross and ATV park in southern Charles County will be allowed to continue operating for another five years, with a requirement to complete a formal noise study within six months.
The Charles County Board of Appeals voted 5-0 during its June 9 meeting to renew the special exception for Wicomico MX and ATV LLC, located at 11100 Kingston Place in Charlotte Hall. The approval requires the park to show it complies with applicable state and county noise standards.
The property sits on about 257 acres in the county’s Agricultural Conservation zone, with approximately 35 to 50 acres actively used for riding, and has operated under special exception approvals dating back to 2002.
County planning staff recommended approval of the renewal with conditions. During the hearing, board members questioned whether the park had ever undergone a formal noise study, noting prior approvals appeared to rely on less formal observations rather than scientific measurements.
The applicant told the board she was not aware of a completed scientific noise study but was not opposed to having one done if required.
The applicant said the park typically sees about 40 to 50 vehicles on site, with peak days potentially reaching around 100 vehicles.
With the unanimous approval, Wicomico MX and ATV may continue operating under the renewed special exception. The facility must complete the noise study within six months and remain within applicable state and county noise limits to continue operating under the five-year renewal.
