Michael and Silvana Martirano

CHARLESTON, WV – A West Virginia news service reported Tuesday, May 31 that the wife of former St. Mary’s County School superintendent and current West Virginia State School Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano has died. According to a Twitter post from the superintendent, Silvana P. Martirano died Monday, May 30. She was 54.

According to the Metro News, a spokeswoman for the West Virginia State Department of Education confirmed Silvana Martirano’s passing, which occurred in Southern Maryland.

The Calvert County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that Silvana Martirano’s body was discovered in the water near a marina in Solomons Tuesday morning, May 31. She reportedly had been visiting relatives in the area during the holiday weekend. Calvert County Sheriff Mike Evans confirms Silvana Martirano’s death is under investigation.

Michael Martirano began his tenure at the top of the Mountain State’s education system in 2014. Prior to that, he was one of the longest-serving superintendents in St. Mary’s County.

Martirano’s Twitter message stated, “I loved her so much. Please pray for my family.”
