1. Use the Correct Format
The way you choose to format your resume, including the content you choose to use as well as the presentation, the perspective is important. Even if you have to apply online or through email, your resume will need to be formatted properly, readable, and of course, free from mistakes.
2. Do Not Repeat
Once you have included information about an employer or yourself, do not repeat it. It only takes up space and the time of your interviewer.
3. Keep it Short
Limit your resume to one page only. Within that one page, keep your information straight and to the point.
4. Avoid This Phrase
Absolutely do not include this sentence: ‘My name is _____ and I am applying for _____’ It will show a lack of experience.
5. Use the Right Keywords
Many companies today will use a database to search for new candidates. This means the HR department will run a search based on keywords related to the job. Make sure you implement as many keywords as you can without going over the top and still sounding coherent.
6. Use Effective Titles
In the first 5 seconds your interviewer is already making a judgment about you and your resume. When they scan your resume for the first time, make sure you have descriptive and informative titles that will stand out.
For example, instead of just listing ‘Accounting’ list something like: Management of A/R and A/P and record keeping.
7. Proofread It
Before you send it in or print it off, proofread your resume. Do this more than once yourself and show it to a friend or family member. This way you can be sure there are not any spelling or grammatical mistakes in your resume.
8. Use Bullet Points
Employers do not have the patience nor the time to read lengthy paragraphs. Use bullet points and short sentences to highlight your skills and your experience.
9. Pay Attention to Typography
Make sure your font is big enough and choose a professional font. Avoid using capital letters all over the place and keep in mind that your overall goal is to communicate your message quickly and clearly.
10. Explain the Benefits of Your Skills
Simply stating what you can do will not impress your employer. Explain how your thesis writing skills can benefit the goals of the company and connect your skills with tangible results.
11. Avoid Negativity
Do not use any information that will be seen as negative in your employer’s eyes. This includes on your resume and in the interview. This includes anything you may have hated about your old job.
12. No Pictures
Unless the role you are applying for directly requires a picture, leave your selfie off of your resume.
13. Don’t Include Irrelevant Information
Sometimes people submit resumes that say things such as ‘Available for an interview’ or ‘References available upon request’. This information is a given and will make your employer say ‘No kidding’. You should also leave out any religious or political information off of your resume.
14. Don’t Lie
This may seem like a no-brainer, but even stretching the truth can end up hurting you in the long run. Many HR departments conduct background research and if you are hired for a job you said you could do, well, you better be able to do it.
15. Mention Who You Have Worked With
If you have worked with a well-known individual in your industry, mention it! Whether you reported to or worked directly with a CEO, Director, or well-known individual, put it down on your resume.
16. Avoid Listing Hobbies
Unless your hobbies will correlate to the job you are after, leave the hobbies off of your resume.
17. List All Your Positions
If you have worked with a company for more than five years, list all the positions you held during that time. Listing them separately will showcase the different responsibilities and duties of each role as well as show all of your skills.
18. Remove Older Work Experiences
If you have been working at the same company for say, 20 years, there is no need for you to list all of your work experience. It will only take up precious space and no one needs to know about the café job you had for 6 months while you were in college if you have had a long career since then. Many experts will agree that the last 15 years of your work experience is enough to list.
19. No Pronouns
Your resume should not include ‘me’ or ‘I’. While this is how we would normally structure sentences, your resume is a document about your person and these pronouns are actually considered redundant.
20. Nothing Fancy
Leave out the fancy fonts, images, and colored backgrounds. Sure, having a flowered border may brighten up the resume, but many employers will toss it in the trash at the sight of something seeming so unprofessional.
