MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — Two Mechanicsville men are facing charges after a traffic stop in St. Mary’s County led to the discovery of suspected cocaine and signs of impaired driving, according to court records.
John Garner Fenwick III, 39, and James Dickerson, 32, were both charged following the April 24, 2026 incident on Old Village Road that escalated into a drug and DUI investigation.
According to charging documents, a deputy observed a vehicle illegally pass another car by crossing a double yellow line before continuing at a high rate of speed. A traffic stop was conducted at a business on Three Notch Road.
During the stop, authorities reported observing a white powdery substance in plain view on the center console, later identified as cocaine, along with items commonly associated with drug use.
Investigators said Fenwick, who was driving, showed signs of impairment, including bloodshot and glassy eyes and the odor of alcohol. Field sobriety testing indicated impairment, and authorities reported he refused additional testing.
A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of additional suspected cocaine and multiple improvised glass smoking devices. Deputies said Dickerson, who was seated in the rear of the vehicle, was in proximity to the items recovered, including a bag containing suspected crack cocaine.
Authorities also reported finding paraphernalia associated with drug use inside the vehicle.
Fenwick is charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, driving under the influence of alcohol, driving while impaired, reckless driving, negligent driving, and multiple traffic violations.
Dickerson is charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Both men were released on their own recognizance following the incident.
Under Maryland law, possession of cocaine carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000. Driving under the influence carries a maximum penalty of up to one year for a first offense, while possession of drug paraphernalia carries a potential penalty of up to one year and a fine of up to $500.
A hearing is set for June 9, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court for Fenwick, while Dickerson is scheduled for a hearing June 8, 2026.
