LUSBY, Md. — A Lusby man is facing multiple charges after deputies say he caused a disturbance near a shopping center, made threats, and resisted arrest during an encounter with law enforcement.

Michael Thomas McHutchison, 36, of Lusby, Maryland, was arrested April 30, 2026, following an incident in the Lusby Town Square shopping center area, according to court documents.

Deputies were dispatched to the shopping center after reports of an intoxicated individual harassing patrons and attempting to obtain alcohol. The individual was later identified as McHutchison.

Authorities located McHutchison walking along the roadway, where passing vehicles reportedly had to swerve to avoid him. When deputies made contact, they said he became argumentative and refused to comply with commands.

According to the report, McHutchison repeatedly confronted deputies, used aggressive language, and at one point made threats involving a firearm. Investigators also allege he later threatened to burn down a hospital while being transported for evaluation.

Deputies reported that McHutchison resisted attempts to detain him, pushing toward officers before being taken to the ground and placed in handcuffs.

He was initially transported for medical evaluation before being taken into custody.

McHutchison is charged with failure to obey a lawful order, disorderly conduct, making an arson threat, threat of mass violence, and resisting or interfering with arrest.

He was later released on his own recognizance, according to court records.

A trial is set for June 1, 2026, in Calvert District Court.

Under Maryland law, making threats of mass violence and arson threats can each carry penalties of up to 10 years in prison, while resisting arrest carries a potential sentence of up to three years. Disorderly conduct and failure to obey a lawful order are misdemeanor offenses that can result in additional jail time and fines.
