SOLOMONS, Md. — Get ready for an unforgettable day of high-energy racing, vibrant community spirit, and riverside fun at the 9th Annual Solomons Island Dragon Boat Festival, splashing down Saturday, August 16, 2025, along the Solomons Island Riverwalk! This free, family-friendly festival benefits Southern Maryland Community Resources (SMCR)—an organization dedicated to creating inclusive programs and events for individuals with developmental differences.
From the moment the first drumbeat echoes across the Patuxent River, the excitement is non-stop. Cheer on colorfully costumed teams as they paddle in sync aboard 40-foot dragon boats in a thrilling display of teamwork and determination. Each team features 16 paddlers, a drummer, and a steer person—many representing local businesses, organizations, and spirited community groups.
The action isn’t just on the water. Enjoy a full day of live entertainment, unique artisan vendors, and family-friendly fun. Kids can unleash their creativity in the all new Dragon’s Nest entertainment area featuring a petting zoo and engaging activity center. A special activity area for infants and toddlers will be set up in a shaded area, and a face painter will on-site for an additional fee. Families can explore the bustling Vendor Village or soak in the festive vibes of the Team Village—a lively hub of team camaraderie, costumes, and cheers.
Don’t miss the festival kickoff on Friday, August 15 at 6 p.m. with the beloved Dotting of the Eye Ceremony outside Our Lady Star of the Sea School. Join us as we awaken the dragons by painting their eyes—an ancient ritual believed to breathe life into the boats and bring good fortune to racers.
The races run Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., and spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and settle in for the thrill of the chase! Parking is available across from the Calvert Marine Museum, with shuttle buses running all day. Visit www.SolomonsDragonBoatFestival.com for race schedules, team info, and event highlights.
All proceeds from the Solomons Dragon Boat Festival support SMCR, Inc., a local 501(c)(3) nonprofit working to create social, recreational, and educational opportunities for people of all abilities. Learn more about their mission and programs at www.somdcr.org.
