BRYANS ROAD, Md. — A Nanjemoy man is facing dozens of animal cruelty charges after authorities say six pit bull puppies were found living in severe neglect conditions behind a Charles County business.

Labrons Edward Butler, 50, of Nanjemoy, was arrested following an investigation by the Charles County Sheriff’s Office and animal control officers related to an incident reported on March 10, 2026.

According to charging documents, officers responded to the area behind a Food Lion in the 2900 block of Marshall Hall Road in Bryans Road after receiving a report of puppies being kept in a small crate without access to food or water.

When an animal control officer arrived, six pit bull-type puppies were located inside a wire crate described as too small for their size. Investigators reported the animals were covered in feces, appeared malnourished, and had visible ribs and hips, indicating a lack of proper care.

Authorities said Butler told officers the puppies were approximately 8 to 9 weeks old and had been given to him by a friend. He allegedly indicated the animals did not have consistent access to water, food, or shelter and did not have adequate space.

Officials further noted Butler initially declined to surrender the puppies, but the animals were ultimately seized and transported to a veterinary facility for evaluation and treatment.

In total, Butler has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and failure to provide proper care, including allegations that the puppies were deprived of necessary food, water, shelter, space, and veterinary attention. Court records show more than 40 misdemeanor charges were filed in connection with the case.

Following his arrest on March 14, Butler was initially held without bond before being released on his own recognizance after a bail review hearing on March 16, 2026.

A hearing is set for April 28, 2026 in Charles County District Court.
