Donte James Jeter-Prince

LEONARDTOWN, Md. — A Mechanicsville man has been charged with second-degree assault after investigators allege he threw a banana at another inmate during an argument inside the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center.

Donte James Jeter-Prince, 34, of Mechanicsville, was charged July 8, 2026, with second-degree assault.

According to charging documents, the inmate-on-inmate assault occurred inside the detention center’s B Pod dayroom.

Surveillance footage reportedly showed the other inmate seated at a dayroom table while Jeter-Prince was inside a nearby open cell.

Following a verbal argument, Jeter-Prince allegedly left the cell, quickly approached the inmate and threw a banana at him from approximately five feet away.

A physical assessment reportedly revealed a visible red welt on the inmate’s right bicep consistent with where the banana struck him.

A trial is scheduled for Aug. 13, 2026, in St. Mary’s County District Court.
