PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — A new physical therapy business is opening in Southern Maryland, offering personalized rehabilitation, one-on-one training and home gym installation services to help patients recover from injuries and improve their overall health and performance.

Alpha Performance Therapy is a private, home-based practice led by Dr. Ryan Hunsicker, DPT. The practice provides physical therapy, wellness coaching and sports performance training with a focus on individualized care. Unlike traditional clinics, Alpha Performance Therapy offers flexible scheduling, one-on-one appointments, customized treatment plans, a private training environment and transparent pricing without unexpected bills.

Hunsicker, a Southern Maryland native, earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Wheeling Jesuit University, now Wheeling University, in 2012. After graduating, he returned home to begin his career while coaching youth and high school lacrosse, including with the Prince Frederick Eagles and Calvert High School. With nearly 14 years of experience in physical therapy and extensive coaching experience ranging from pre-K through high school athletes, Hunsicker has developed a strong focus on injury prevention, sports performance and treating the body as a whole. Although he enjoys working with athletes, he treats patients of all ages and conditions.

Hunsicker said his decision to open Alpha Performance Therapy stemmed from a desire to lead others toward healthier lifestyles while addressing limitations he has observed in traditional physical therapy models.

“I’ve always seen myself as a leader,” Hunsicker said. “I’ve seen a gap in the traditional therapy model. A lot of people don’t get therapy until they’re already hurt. I wanted to create a practice that helps people prevent injuries, recover from them and stay healthy long after their rehabilitation is complete.”

Rather than waiting for an injury to occur, Hunsicker said he hopes to educate patients on proper movement, strength training and healthy lifestyle habits that can reduce the likelihood of future injuries. He said many people want to remain active but are often unsure how to exercise safely after recovering from an injury or surgery. By combining physical therapy with wellness coaching and performance training, he aims to give patients the confidence and knowledge to continue living active lives.

Hunsicker said the practice’s cash-based model allows him to spend more time with each patient and evaluate the entire body instead of focusing solely on the injured area.

“Sometimes a joint hurts because of the way the whole body is moving,” Hunsicker said. “The first visit is a thorough evaluation to understand how a person moves, where their limitations are and then develop a plan that’s specific to their needs.”

Hunsicker said education is another key component of his approach. During appointments, he works with patients to help them better understand the causes of their pain or physical limitations rather than simply treating symptoms. He said teaching proper movement patterns, stretching techniques and strengthening exercises allows patients to take a more active role in their recovery while building habits that can improve their long-term health.

For athletes, Hunsicker incorporates movement assessments designed to identify weaknesses or imbalances that could increase the risk of injury. He said overuse injuries are common among athletes who specialize in a single sport at an early age and believes proper conditioning, recovery and training can help reduce those risks before they develop into more serious problems.

“I can’t promise someone they’ll never get hurt,” Hunsicker said. “But there are a lot of things we can do to improve how the body moves and lower the risk of injury.”

Because appointments take place in patients’ homes, Hunsicker said he can observe how they move in their everyday environment and recommend practical changes that fit their lifestyle. He also assists clients in creating home workout spaces with equipment tailored to their individual goals, making it easier to continue exercising after completing rehabilitation.

Patients also have the option to continue working with Hunsicker after completing rehabilitation through maintenance programs designed to promote long-term health and reduce the risk of future injuries. Those programs are intended to help patients maintain strength, flexibility and mobility while reducing the likelihood of recurring injuries.

Beyond rehabilitation, Hunsicker said he hopes Alpha Performance Therapy becomes a resource for Southern Maryland residents looking to remain active throughout every stage of life. Whether working with competitive athletes, adults recovering from surgery or individuals simply trying to improve their mobility, he said his goal is to provide personalized care that helps patients regain confidence, return to the activities they enjoy and maintain healthier lifestyles for years to come.
