Combing shorelines for sea glass is the latest hobby for many beach goers all over the world. Learn everything you ever wanted to know about these treasures on Sunday, January 16, at 2:00 p.m. in the Calvert Marine Museum lobby.
Richard LaMotte, author of Pure SEA GLASS, will present the fourth topic in the Sunday Conversations with Chesapeake Authors series. Bring your own sea glass for identification or choose a piece and have it made into customized jewelry by one of the visiting jewelry artists.ย ย
What is this craze? Sea glass is glass that is found on beaches along oceans or large lakes that has been tumbled and smoothed by the water and sand into smooth frosted glass. โA lot of its attraction is nostalgia โ wondering what it is and where it came from,โ said Richard LaMotte. LaMotte is a recognized expert on sea glass and his book with its beautiful photographs presents some of the best sea glass ever collected. See his sample glassware and purchase a signed copy of the Pure SEA GLASS book in the museum store. The store will also feature sea glass jewelry perfect for Valentineโs Day gifts.ย
Jay Norris of Owings, Maryland will also be on hand to share his hobby of creating colorful driftwood framed art out of his sea glass collection. Spending his life on the Chesapeake Bay collecting sea glass and sharkโs teeth, see how this hobby has turned pieces of frosted colored glass into amazing creations. ย ย
Sunday Conversations with Chesapeake Authors Series is funded by The Southern Maryland Heritage Area Consortium and the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority, with support from the Holiday Inn Solomons. Sunday Conversations are FREE events and will also be hosted on February 20, and March 20, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the museum.ย
