At 1:27 a.m. April 18, Charles County Sheriffโ€™s officers responded to a residence in the 10500 block of Beechwood Drive in Waldorf for the report of a domestic assault with a handgun.

Investigation revealed a 44-year-old man pointed a handgun at a 52-year-old woman and hit her with an unknown object, knocking her unconscious.

Officers arrested the man and charged him with first- and second-degree assault, using a handgun in commission of a felony and reckless endangerment. He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner.

His name is being withheld to protect the victim.

The victim was not seriously injured. Officer J. Riffle investigated.


At 12:56 p.m. April 18, Charles County Sheriffโ€™s officers responded to a residence in the 200 block of Brent Road in Waldorf for the report of an assault with a weapon.

Investigation revealed the victim, a 30-year-old man, confronted a group of people attempting to fight an acquaintance in front of his residence. John Robert Bassett, 20, of Waldorf pointed a handgun at the victim. Bassett and the others fled the scene, and the victim called police.

Officers found Bassett a short time later, arrested him and charged him with first- and second-degree assault. He was being held at the Charles County Detention Center pending an appearance before a district court commissioner. Officer C. M. Barrows investigated.
