On 04/27/2015 at approximately 9:04 a.m. Deputy Dean Naughton was patrolling in the area of Route 4 at Rousby Hall Road in Lusby. While on patrol he observed a gray Jaguar passenger car bearing Virginia Registration WRK7201. Dep. Naughton observed a black male driver inside the vehicle talking on a black cellphone.
ย ย ย A traffic stop was initiated on the vehicle in the area of Route 4 at Sweetwater Road. Contact was made with the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle and he was told why he was being stopped. The driver denied talking on his cellphone while driving, however when speaking with him Dep. Naughton observed a black cellphone sitting in his lap and he could hear the voice of another person on the phone. The driver then picked up the phone while Dep. Naughton was speaking with him and told the person on the other end of the phone to โhold on.โ
ย ย ย Dep. Naughton asked the driver for his Driverโs License and vehicle registration. The driver said he left his Driverโs License at home. The driver gave Dep. Naughton a false name. Dep. Naughton returned to his vehicle and asked the Calvert Control Center for a Maryland License and Wanted check on the false name. Dep. Naughton also asked the Control Center for an MVA Photo of the subject.ย Dep. Naughton observed the MVA Photo and exited his vehicle to compare the MVA Photo to the driver of the vehicle and to issue the appropriate Traffic Violation Warnings.ย As Dep. Naughton began to approach the vehicle, the vehicle fled south on Route 4.
ย ย ย Dep. Naughton told dispatch the vehicle was fleeing and pursued the vehicle.ย The vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. When the vehicle approached the area of Route 4 at Coster Road, it left the travel portion of the roadway and began passing multiple vehicles on the right shoulder of Route 4. Dep. Naughton briefly lost site of the vehicle due to moderate traffic. When he regained site of the vehicle, he observed the vehicle had spun out across all lanes of Route 4 and crashed into the guardrail in the center median of Route 4 just north of Southern Connector Blvd.
ย ย ย Dep. Naughton exited his vehicle to check for injuries and observed the black male driver had run across the north bound lanes of Route 4. He was running east up an embankment towards HG Trueman Road.ย After it was determined there were no injuries due to the accident, Dep. Naughton continued to pursue the black male on foot. After a short foot pursuit, the black male was seen on the porch of 380 Home Place in Lusby.
ย ย ย Dep. Naughton began giving the subject loud verbal commands while holding the subject at gun point. Dep. Naughton repeatedly advised the suspect to show his hands and to face away from him.ย The suspect threw his hand in the air and began saying โJust shoot me.โ Dep. Naughton continued to give verbal commands and the suspect eventually complied and was taken into custody.ย Trooper Gill assisted with the apprehension.ย
ย ย ย After handcuffing the suspect, he told police his real name was Chris William Savage (DOB 04/04/1977). Dep. Naughton ran a License and Wanted check through the Control Center. The Control Center said Chris William Savage had a Suspended Maryland Driverโs License and was also wanted for Assault 2nd Degree through the Calvert County Sheriffโs Office and he had another open warrant through MSP for Failure to Appear.
ย ย ย ย ย ย Shortly after this incident, Eugene Louis Johnson (DOB 09/15/1957), business owner of D & E Repairs located at 12465 Rousby Hall Road called and reported the above described vehicle as stolen. Cpl. B Gray responded to that location and verified the vehicle was at the business for repairs and was stolen just prior to the traffic stop.ย Johnson further stated Savage is related to him and was just on the property this weekend. Johnson was not certain how he knew the keys were in the vehicle and Savage did not have permission to take any vehicle on the lot.
ย ย ย After Cpl. B Gray contacted Johnson, police were able to contact the vehicle owner Patrick Lee Floyd. Floyd advised his vehicle is only valued at approximately $5,000.00.
ย ย ย Savage was transported to the Calvert County Detention Center. Savage is being charged with Theft of a Motor Vehicle, Providing a false name to a uniformed Police Officer, Attempting to elude a uniformed Police Officer by fleeing on foot and by vehicle, Presume identity to avoid prosecution and numerous other related traffic offenses.
