Marilyn Single, CCPS band and strings instructor, invited the Air Forceโ€™s Covington String Quartet to perform for students at Arthur Middleton Elementary School. Greg Pinney, Luke Wedge, Will Hurd and Frank McKinster demonstrated the violin, viola and cello through classical music performance.

Four Thomas Stone HS wrestlers participated in the Zack Strauss Summer Slam Tournament (Allentown, Pa); each placed in his individual weight class. Senior Kwame Marshall earned 2nd place in the heavyweight class. Freshman Jamel Felder earned 3rd place in the 145 lb. weight class. Senior Justin Bowersox earned 1st and senior Raymond Bruce earned 2nd in the 190 lb. weight class. ย Coach Michael Larson attended the tournament with his athletes.

Over 30 Westlake HS faculty and staff members wore their college t-shirts to school on Thursday, Sept. 13, to promote the annual CCPS College Fair. Westlake Principal Chrystal Benson said the college spirit day helped get students excited about the fair and expose them to different colleges.

More than 134 colleges and universities participated in the annual CCPS College Fair on Monday, Sept. 17, at the Greater Waldorf Jaycees Community Center.ย  1,550 students attended the daytime session; an additional 1,765-plus parents and students attended the fairโ€™s evening session.

Alice Yutzy, a ceramics teacher at La Plata HS, recently entered her โ€œSupportโ€ sculpture in a national juried exhibit in Louisiana. ย She also recently won a cash award for three additional pieces, โ€œRenewalโ€, โ€œConnectionโ€, and โ€œInner Pathโ€, in the Maryland Art Education Association Juried Exhibit held in Ellicott City, Md.

Ebony Sherrill, 10th grade Westlake HS, was recently crowned Miss Maryland Junior Teen. ย She also earned places in pageant categories such as acting, talent and photography. ย She now represents Charles County and Maryland at the National Miss Junior Teen competition to be held in Anaheim, Ca. on November 19-25.

Charles County Association of Student Councils Organizes for 2007-08

THE CCASC HELD its first meeting Oct. 4 at La Plata HS.ย  Students participated in a question and answer session with CCPS Superintendent James E. Richmond.

More than 100 student leaders from all six county high schools met to discuss teacher transfers, building renovations, the next new high school, and other issues. ย Richmond talked to the council members about student enrollment, the CCPS budget, upcoming construction projects and this yearโ€™s events.

The CCASC provides an opportunity for students to improve their leadership skills by presenting leadership workshops for middle school students and coordinating events such as the Senior Citizensโ€™ Prom.

Members participate in act
