WALDORF, Md. – Two families have been displaced by the townhouse fire in Waldorf.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., on June 1, firefighters responded to the structure fire in the 3000 block of Heathcote Road.

Crews first on the scene reported the two-story townhouse was showing fire on the side of the home. Firefighters had the fire under control in approximately 15 minutes. The occupants of the residence escaped without injuries.

The deputy fire marshal investigated and found the cause of the accidental fire, located on the exterior of the residence, was the result of improperly discarded materials in the trashcan.

As a result of the fire one adult and two children, as well as the occupants of a neighboring residence, were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The estimated structure loss is $175,000 and contents lost total $25,000.
