PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — An Upper Marlboro man was charged after deputies recovered a loaded rifle and additional magazines during a traffic stop near the Prince Frederick Walmart, according to charging documents.
Jykiel Eugene Barnes, 26, of Upper Marlboro, was charged with failing to obey a reasonable and lawful order from a law enforcement officer and resisting or interfering with an arrest following the June 6, 2026, traffic stop.
The incident began around 1:35 p.m. when a Calvert County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a white 2017 Mercedes-Benz 300 series traveling south on North Solomons Island Road near Dares Beach Road. Charging documents state the vehicle was not displaying a month tab on its registration, did not have a front tag and had blacked-out taillights with dark window tint.
A deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the vehicle did not come to a complete stop until it pulled into the south entrance of the Prince Frederick Walmart, according to court documents.
Barnes was identified as the driver. While deputies were speaking with him, a deputy approached the passenger side of the vehicle and observed a rifle stock on the passenger-side floorboard, along with the silver tip of a rifle barrel underneath a black puffer jacket.
Deputies then asked Barnes to step out of the vehicle. Charging documents state Barnes was ordered multiple times to exit and refused.
A deputy reached into the vehicle, unbuckled Barnes’ seatbelt and grabbed his arm. Another deputy grabbed Barnes’ other arm after he tensed up and provided passive resistance, according to court documents. Barnes was then removed from the vehicle and placed under arrest.
Deputies recovered a loaded Bear Creek Arsenal BCA15 .556 rifle from the passenger-side floorboard. Charging documents state the rifle had 26 rounds loaded. Deputies also recovered three additional magazines, including one loaded with 16 additional rounds, along with another rifle stock.
The rifle, ammunition and magazines were placed into evidence. Charging documents note that charges related to the rifle were pending further consultation with the Calvert County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Barnes was taken to the Calvert County Detention Center. Court records show he was initially held without bond on June 6 before being released on recognizance following a June 8 bond review before Judge Michelle R. Saunders.
A trial is set for July 21 in Calvert County District Court.
