Charlotte Hall, MDโ€”When is the last time you went fishing with a person you care about, spending your day talking with that person, wishfully hoping for a nibble on your fishing line?

Well, in Charles County, the 2015 Annual Fall โ€œFishinโ€™ Buddiesโ€ Derby at Gilbert Run Park supplies all the fun fishing memories a family could want.

This family- oriented fishing derby started in the wee hours of the morning, 7 a.m., and lasted until 12:30 p.m. The anglers compete by teams, however, the teams must consist of an adult at least 21- years of age and a child of the age six through fifteen.

Trophies are awarded in two different age divisions. Many different local businesses have donated numerous fishing- related prizes.

โ€œThis program has been running for 29 years. It is really just about the community getting involved. A lot of times we have families that have never fished before. This is a great opportunity to be together as a family,โ€™โ€™ said Casey Jones, who is the Park Manager at Gilbert Run Park.

Morgan Halbert was having a wonderful day with her dad, Dusty Halbert.

โ€œIt is great to be spending this time with my daughter,โ€ said Halbert.

Halbert showed off his catch, and then went back to showing his daughter some techniques on fishing.ย

Approximately 56 teams were competing this year in the Fall โ€œFishinโ€™ Buddiesโ€ Derby, all hoping for a trophy.

โ€œWe have six different trophy categories that everyone is competing for. The six fish that will win a trophy are largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, catfish, and trout. Trophies will be determined by the most caught and the largest in each category,โ€ said Jones.
