UPDATE – Monday, May 15

La Plata, MD – State investigators reported a fire at a Charles County apartment building was started by a candle. According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the blaze Friday, May 12 on East Hawthorne Drive in La Plata resulted in $85,000 damage. No one was injured in the 11:30 a.m. fire.

“The occupants noticed smoke and flames coming from a back bedroom,” a deputy state fire marshal reported. “Neighbors attempted to extinguish the fire but were unsuccessful due to high heat and heavy smoke conditions. The family was displaced and is being assisted by the American Red Cross. The occupants in neighboring apartments were not displaced.”

Thirty-nine firefighters responded to the scene and brought the flames under control in 30 minutes.

La Plata, MD 12:00 pm- An apartment caught fire around noon this afternoon on Hawthorne Road East in La Plata, MD. The fire has been put out. Expect Fire apparatus in the area for the time being.
